Make your own Greek Yogurt
After reading several articles on yogurt making, Greek yogurt, to be exact, it seems the simplest method is the one talked about the most. One lady invested over $100.00 in a yogurt making machine and all the ingredients and came out with a "very costly mess"(her words exactly). read more

Spinach with Sesame and Garlic
Updated, from the recipe archive. First posted November, 2005 I never get tired of eating spinach. Good thing it's so good for you! This is a fun take on spinach, a Korean version, with the spinach wilted in sesame oil with garlic, and sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds. I found the recipe years ago in Mark Bittman's The Best Recipes in the World. In typical Bittman style, the spinach is quick, easy, and good. Continue reading "Spinach with Sesame and Garlic" »

How to Boil Artichokes
Boiling artichokes is one of the easiest ways to cook them. You can boil them plain or stuff them and boil them. Prepare the Artichokes Cut off the stems so the artichokes can stand upright in the pan. Next, remove the tough outer leaves near the stem. Rinse the artichokes in cold water and let dry. Cut about a half inch of the tops of the artichokes. If you won't be using them right away, squeeze lemon juice over the artichokes to prevent them from darkening. Prepare the Pot Place about an inch of salted water in a large pot or Dutch oven. For more flavor, you can saute a bit of chopped garlic in some olive oil in the bottom of the pot and then add about an inch of vegetable broth instead of water. Put flame on medium heat and until it is boiling. Cooking the Artichokes Once the...

Golden Tomato Sauce
I spent last Saturday brewing beer with my brother-in-law. Thankfully he knows what he's doing in this regard, because at this point, I can't say the same for myself. We made an all-grain rye ale, building on this recipe. Put another way, we sat around the garden drinking home brews from the vault, we boiled grains, took a lot of temperatures, transferred huge pots of hot liquid from pot to pot, and enjoyed a perfect day outside. My parents stopped by later on and we had an early dinner. My contribution was a simple lasagna made with a golden tomato sauce I like to make with heirloom tomatoes this time of year. The sauce is good, and it is a great way to use up summer tomatoes. The sauce couldn't be simpler. It's similar in spirit to my favorite five minute tomato sauce - but it gets ...

New Study: Low-Carb vs Low-Fat Diets
I can often tell when a diet study has hit the news in a big way, because floods of people suddenly come to my site, A couple of weeks ago (during my vacation, so I was late getting to this), there was a diet study in the news - one of the "low-fat vs low-carb" studies. This one was somewhat unusual because it followed the participants for two years, but in other ways it was similar to many other studies, and most of the results were predictable (although the ways in which they varied from the norm were telling). Capsule Summary: People were randomly assigned to a low-carb group, which was supposed to be similar to the Atkins Diet, and a low-calorie group which was low in fat. After two years, they had both maintained a similar weight loss (about 15 pounds). Other factors, including ...

Petropavlovsk Photos
This is the area around Aunty Sveta’s place in Petropavlovsk (I think the government now wants it to be called Petropavl, but most people I spoke to still add the ovsk. This area of Kazakhstan is very close to Russia, so it is possible that the renaming is an attempt to make it sound more [...]

Fried Padron Peppers - Spain's Deliciously Dangerous Divas
This is the time of year when one of my favorite seasonal foods, the Padron pepper makes its very short, annual appearance.By the way, in the video I refer to them as "Padrones," which is what I've always called them, and what the guy I always bought them from at the SF Farmers' market called them. However, they are more commonly called Padron peppers (just in case you are calling around looking for some). What follows is a repost from 2008...Padrones are small green peppers, native to Spain, but occasionally available in American farmer's markets. The season is short, and in just a few weeks they disappear, like some mysterious, charismatic visitor, leaving just as things are heating up. They tell you they'll see you next year, but that doesn't help the melancholy as you mope over to the j...

How To Lose Weight Through The Body-Typing Program
I always wondered why some people I know can eat pasta, skip breakfast and still lose weight, while other people gain lose weight best by eliminating most pastas and breads and rely mostly on protein and vegetables. After reading the Body Type Diet And Lifetime Nutrition Plan, by Dr. Elliot Abravanel and Elizabeth King Morrison, it finally began to make sense to me.  Some people, like me, are dominated more by their thyroid gland. Eating foods that stimulate the thyroid gland or drinking too much caffeine (as I used to do) can exhaust your thyroid and interfere with metabolism. Most T-Types had a fast metabolism when their thyroids were working in peak condition. Dr. Abravanel says other body types include the Gonadal Body Type or G Type, the Adrenal Gland Body Type or A ...
